Is your cat getting enough moisture from his diet?

*For the purposes of this article we’ll refer to cats as ‘he’.

Dehydration in cats can quickly become a big problem. If your cat doesn’t have enough water in his diet, he can get kidney problems.

But don’t worry, there are a few simple things you can do.

Mix water with his dry food

Adding water to dry cat food is one way of upping your furry-friends water intake without having to buy additional products. The dry food will absorb the moisture and this will pass on to your cat when he eats it.

It’s important, though to make sure that you don’t leave it out for more than half an hour, particularly in hot environments, as it can go bad far quicker than kibble on its own.

Try mixing some water into your Orijen or Acana kibble.

Pick up some wet food

Adding wet food into the mix is probably the easiest way to get your kitty consuming more water. A lot of wet foods are extremely palatable, like Little BigPaw and Applaws, so you won’t have any issues encouraging him to gobble them up. They also contain a lot more water than dry food, so you can worry less about how much he’s drinking out of the water bowl.

Switch up his water bowl

It’s really common for us to speak to concerned kitty owners who tell us that their cats simply won’t drink water. As cats historically didn’t drink much water as they ate a diet of prey that had 70%-80% moisture content, they haven’t evolved with the same thirst drive as humans. Therefore we sometimes have to do some tricks to get them to drink.

Some cats like very shallow dishes, others will only drink running water from a tap or a water fountain, and then there’s those who will only drink when the bowl is filled to the brim as they hate their sensitive whiskers touching the bowl. So cat parents can be up against a tough battle.

Here are some things you can do to encourage him to drink water:

  • Have multiple small bowls in various locations rather than one big one
  • Clean the water bowl every day to stop bad scents putting your kitty off
  • Use filtered water (cats can taste the difference too)
  • Place water dishes near your cats favourite sleeping spots
  • Make sure the dish is filled to the top to avoid upsetting his whiskers
  • Add a Ping-Pong ball to the water bowl so that your cat can see the water level.

Hopefully the above has given you some advice if you’re worried about whether your cat is getting enough moisture in his diet.
