Decoding Wet Food Textures

When it comes to feeding your pet, you certainly want to opt for only the best to make sure you’re not compromising their health and nutrition. Adding the right wet food to your pet’s diet can provide high moisture content to help them stay hydrated, as well as boosting their nutrition.

Choosing the right wet food for your pet can be tricky as there are a lot of factors to keep in mind such as taste, texture, and your pet’s preferences. Our breakdown below will help you decode and understand the different types of wet food textures to make the right choice for your pet.

Based on the different brands of wet food we carry, we’ve separated them into different categories of texture:

  1. Broth - Broth based wet food is mainly a liquid consistency along with fish, meat, or chicken that is finely shredded. Wet food recipes from Applaws, Fish4cats, and Thrive are broth based with natural ingredients.

  2. Mousse - A mousse is a soft prepared food that incorporates air bubbles to give it a light and airy texture. The Little Big Paw wet food for cats has a delicate mousse texture packed with protein, vitamins, and Omega. For dogs, the Fish4Dogs Finest Mousse is made by gently steam cooking fish and then whipped to give it an airy texture - making it extra creamy and delicious!

  3. Flaked - Flaked texture generally refers to food separated or cut into flakes or thin pieces. The Canagan Tuna with Crab Wet Food is made with tender flaked tuna that is simply cooked in its own natural gravy.

  4. Pâté - This type of wet food has a uniformly smooth and spreadable consistency. Ziwi Peak wet food has a creamy and meaty Pâté texture made with up to 92% Meat, Organs, and New Zealand Green Mussels. Our Exclusive brand Vitalin also has a Pâté textured wet food in Fresh Tuna and Fresh Chicken flavours. These recipes are complete, balanced pet food for adult dogs.

  5. Chunks - Chunks are generally cube sized meat that are immersed in a thick gravy. The Little Big Paw Dog tins are complete meat chunks with rich herb gravy.

Dogs and cats are usually fed the same food for a long time. This means that a sudden change can be difficult for their digestive system to adapt to. Although this is totally normal, it’s important to introduce the new food slowly to make it comfortable for your pet.

Begin by mixing 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food. Over the next five to seven days, slowly change the proportions and gradually increase the amount of the new food and decrease the amount of the old food until you are feeding 100% of the new food.
