Cold weather tips for your pup

Granted, if you’re staying in the UAE this festive season and your furbaby is a chowchow, you needn’t worry about keeping him warm because his fur will do a pretty good job of insulating him on it’s own.

However, if you have a dog more affected by the colder weather or you’re going to cooler climates with your furry friend for the festive season, you might be thinking about ways to make sure he’s warm. After all, the last thing you want to do is leave him at home when you’re out on winter walks.

Below are our top tips for keeping your dog warm in the colder weather.

Let’s start with the obvious – sweaters

All dogs can get cold. But pups with short or no fur and those with little legs, as well as puppies and older dogs, are more susceptible to the cold weather. Picking up a dog jacket or sweater will keep him cosy in the cooler breeze.

Boots

If you are new to being a dog parent, or tend to keep him indoors, you might not know the multiple benefits of owning dog booties, which are essentially gloves for your pup.

Even though dog’s paws are tough they still suffer from the cold, and booties are the perfect solution. Not only are they good in the cooler months, but they also protect your dog’s paws from the hot pavements in summer, and from rocks that you might come across if you take him for a hike.

Keep him dry

If you’re going to much colder climates you might run into snow. It’s really important to take special care to get any ice or snow off your pup’s coat and from between his toes – it’s also really important to dry his ears and tail thoroughly.

Coming in and out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin in your dog, so it’s really important he’s as dry as possible when he comes back in.

Don’t bathe him too much

Washing your dog too often can remove essential oils and increase the chance of him developing dry and flaky skin. Shampoos such as the Hownd Playful Pup Shampoo are sensitive to suit more fragile skin and can be a good product to switch in the colder months.
