Potty training your dog or cat? Here are our top tips

Potty training a cat or dog is an important step for any pet parent. It can be challenging, so it’s really important to have the right products to hand.

Essentials for potty training dogs:

  • • Training pads

There are many reasons why pet parents use training pads. Whether you live in an apartment, don’t have a garden, or your dog is older and sometimes not able to make it outside – they can be essential. In the most part training a puppy to use training pads is a lot easier than an older dog who will have developed other habits.

What you need to do: place a training pad on a hard surface, it’s important that you dedicate this space to your dog as moving them around can confuse him. Have in mind a verbal demand that you will use when you’re telling your dog to go to the toilet and make sure you stick to it. Visit the training pad 10 minutes after each time your dog eats, and reward him with a treat and/or praise when he goes to the toilet in the right place.

After you feel your dog is confident with the training pad, see if he goes to it on his own – this might take some patience but eventually you’ll get there.

  • • Household cleaner

Messes and accidents will happen during the potty training process so have a ready supply of dog-friendly cleaner – the chemicals found in most regular household cleaners can be absorbed through the pads of dog’s feet, therefore you need to get one that is suitable for him.

If your dog goes to the toilet where he shouldn’t, he will continue to visit the spot if you don’t clean it properly and he smells pee, so you need to be vigilant.

  • • Poop bags

As dog owners, we tend to end up with poop bags everywhere – in all of our pockets, our handbags, and in our glove compartments – they’re an obvious essential.

Essentials for potty training cats:

  • • Litter box

Did you know that cats instinctively go to the toilet in a sandy substance? This makes litter box training fairly straightforward because your cat wants it.

One of the most important things to do for potty training your cat has multiple litter boxes. If you live in a multi-story house, have at least one litter box on each floor, and an extra one somewhere just in case. Your cat needs easy access, particularly when you start training or if she’s an older cat.

After a meal, take your cat to a litter box. Don’t place her in it, just put her next to and her instincts should kick in.

  • • Cat litter

Every cat litter box needs cat litter. Cats can be extremely fussy with litter, and it’s crucial that you let your cat choose her own. To help her choose, set up several litter boxes next to each other with different litter options – your cat will choose her favourite. Don’t deter from this, as changing the litter might mean she avoids the litter box altogether.

  • • Litter scoop

Cats are clean animals, and they tend to only go to the toilet in a litter box that is clean. Make sure you scoop at least once daily and wash the box out every couple of weeks.
